Panzer General I

World War Two seems to be everywhere: in the cinemas, on television and especially on our PCs. Anyone who regularly plays computer games will have no doubt noticed the recent spate of Wartime games, some good, some… not so good, from real time strategy to simulations to first person shooters.
However, to see some of the greatest World War Two based games, you have to look a little further back. Panzer General is such a game. It features two-dimensional graphics on a hex-based background, but then graphics aren’t everything. The game play is excellent, fully immersing the player and allowing would be Rommels to recreate some of the most famous battles of the War, from Blitzkrieg to Berlin.
The game is turn-based, and while this may be unappealing to those of us used to playing fast paced destroy everything in sight type games, it certainly helps to give a feeling of realism as there will always be a delay before you can react to new situations. You will experience both the joy of watching the enemy collapse in the face of a massive tank assault, and the frustration of sending units forward, ending your turn and then seeing enemy units that you did not even know were there pound them to pieces, although this never gets boring or unpleasant.
Replacements are received in the form of prestige points, and overwhelming defeats and heavy bombing raids will affect your supplies of tanks and aircraft. This system works very well, although you have to carefully manage your points to avoid rapidly running out of them.
The bulk of the game is taken up by the campaigns, which are played as the Germans (hence the name) and span the entire length of the war. There are also scenarios, which can be played as either side and are based on individual battles (El Alamein, Arnhem, Stalingrad etc.) and there is even the option to change history with alternative Operation Sealions, battles of Moscow and even a German attack on Washington.
There are a large number of units available, from heavy bombers to U-boats to bridge engineers, and all of the major participants in the European and North African theatres are represented.
However, as I mentioned the game is very dated in terms of graphics and sound effects, and while they are still fairly pleasant, this might put some potential buyers off. Also, there is a slightly annoying feature in that all battles must be completed in a set number of turns, and all objectives must be taken if you are to win. So if you are on the verge of winning and the time runs out, you lose, even if strategically you have won an overwhelming victory.
Overall, it is a game that should be played by all fans of the strategy genre, especially as it can be purchased very cheaply on budget.
