The tower defense genre has been steadily growing for a few years now, with many such games spicing up the recipe with unique elements to stand out. Enter Sanctum, the latest game to carve out a niche on an increasingly crowded landscape. In this downloadable game, you build towers to protect a key structure from gangs of marching meanies, as you do in most such games. But here is the hook: While those monsters maraud down their predetermined paths, you take aim at them with your own weapons from a first-person perspective. Having to face those lumbering monstrosities makes Sanctum a more immediate experience than your average tower defense game; you can no longer be content to watch from above and must meet the terrors head-on. It's a shame there aren't more ways to enjoy Sanctum: It only comes with three different levels, but with 20 or more waves in each, they are lengthy ones. Though you may wish that the concept had more content built around it, what's here is fresh enough to make Sanctum a fun way to while away the hours--even if you're burnt out on the genre.

In many respects, Sanctum is like most other tower defense games. Monsters emerge from predetermined spawn points and meander (or float, or scamper) down predetermined paths. Your goal is to destroy them by placing turrets along that path at strategic points. You also need to extend these bumbling buffoons' journey as best you can by building your turret blocks in such a way as to create mazes for them to traverse. While you're probably used to placing towers from an overhead view, in Sanctum, you do so from a first-person view. This can be disorienting at first, especially when planning out your maze. Luckily, you can switch to an overhead view to see how your labyrinth is coming along, though you can't actually build anything this way.

Maze management is only half of the equation, however. Once you've spent all your allotted resources, you press a key, and the invasion begins. Obese creatures on spindly legs, giant lanky bobble heads, and other oddities descend upon your maze. In other tower defense games, you hope and pray that your turret configuration is clever enough to destroy them; in Sanctum, hope and prayer are no substitute for a warm gun in your hands. As such, you use one of three weapons--an assault rifle, a sniper rifle, and a gun that slows enemies down--to give your turrets a helping hand. The shooting on its own isn't particularly satisfying. Monsters are oblivious to your presence, and in spite of the blood and goo that erupt upon a deadly headshot, there's little sense of impact. But when the mutant parade is in full swing, you'll be too busy sniping floating spores to give it much thought.

You make the most important strategic choices between waves. Do you spend resources on upgrading existing turrets or build new ones? Do you upgrade weapons or flesh out your labyrinth even further? You must be conscious of what enemies will be next coming down the pike when considering these questions. Bobble heads are most vulnerable to your own weapons, so an upgraded sniper rifle may be the way to go. But attending to the bobble heads might mean leaving the walkers that accompany them to your turrets, so you have to find an appropriate balance when spending your dough. The single-player portion of the game features a nice difficulty curve, allowing you to get your bearings early on and putting what you've learned to the test by the time you reach the final level. When you leave the campaign behind, you can join friends or strangers to tackle endless waves together. Developing a strategy while working with two resource pools is great fun, though the challenge ramps up considerably faster here than in single-player, so much so that you might get frustrated by how little damage even your fully upgraded weapons are doing. Unfortunately, there there are no other modes to conquer.

Originally released for Microsoft's Xbox video game console in March, Rallisport Challenge was one of the best driving games on the system by virtue of its gorgeous graphics, well-designed tracks, and great variety of cars. The game was developed by Battlefield 1942 creator Digital Illusions, and its publisher Microsoft has since opted to release the game on the PC. And racing fans who don't own an Xbox will be pleased to know that nothing was lost in the translation. In fact, Rallisport Challenge for the PC even has a few key bonuses that weren't in the Xbox version, including noticeably sharper graphics and the ability to play online.

Rallisport Challenge is actually like four different rally games in one. There are a total of 41 tracks spread across 12 different environments, and each environment is the setting for one of four unique rally types. There are the traditional rally races, wherein you race against the clock throughout a series of checkpoints; ice racing, which involves competing against three other opponents on icy, slippery roads; hill climbs, which are similar to rally races except that your overall objective is to scale a mountain as fast as possible; and rally cross events, which are circuit-based races against other drivers on tracks that have several different types of terrain, like mud, gravel, or asphalt. To be precise, the tracks in the game consist of one of six different terrain types, and each one has a dramatic effect on the way your car handles. Tarmac, for example, provides for extraordinary grip but makes it somewhat difficult for you to turn a corner with a powerslide--a technique that's a staple of rally racing. Gravel and mud, on the other hand, will affect how fast you accelerate in a straight line, but the relative lack of traction makes it easier to push your car around turns. Before every race, you're given the option of choosing a tire compound that's best suited to the current track conditions, but things such as changing weather conditions (a light drizzle at the start of a race might clear up by the time you cross the finish line) and multiple surface types (some tracks consist of mud and gravel or tarmac and sand) add a bit of challenge to this selection process.

As you'd probably expect from a racing game, Rallisport Challenge is split up between a persistent career mode and a quick race mode designed to get you in and out of a race as fast as possible. A third option, a time attack mode, is also available. Time attack is similar to quick race, but in it, you compete against the clock, not other cars. Obviously, the game's core lies in the career mode, in which you create a persona and compete in a series of 19 events that are split up across four difficulty levels. Each of these events is made up of anywhere from three to nine individual rally, hill climb, rally cross, or ice races, and you'll get points for driving each course faster than the posted times for first, second, and third place.

Initially, only the easiest series of races is available to you, but as you rack up enough points, you'll unlock subsequent events. If you didn't think you gave a certain series of races your best shot, you can go back and try it again, though you'll lose all the points that you gained in your last run, so there's a bit of risk involved in reattempting old races. Interestingly enough, you also get points for completing each race with as little damage to your car as possible. If you aren't careful, your car can end up with broken taillights, shattered windows, and bent fenders, and the more scrapes and bruises that your car accrues, the fewer points you'll get at the end of each race. However, no matter how much you bang up your cars, damage has no effect on their handling or performance.

Combat: Task Force 121 is a game that's just as hackneyed as its title makes it sound. Available for the usually telling price of $19.99, Task Force 121 is a thoroughly rudimentary military-themed first-person shooter that puts the bulk of its focus on online play. Up to 16 people can play online, and there are several different modes of play. While this might sound like a pretty good deal, the unbalanced shooting mechanics and mostly lousy maps pretty much do away with that notion right away. And the thoroughly terrible single-player campaign further reinforces this fact. Had the developer perhaps just skipped the single-player portion altogether to spend some more time hammering out the problems with its multiplayer, the game might have turned into a decent little shooter for online-shooter fans. In this form, however, Task Force 121 simply can't compete with the myriad other shooters available for the PC.

Task Force 121 includes LAN and online multiplayer modes, which support up to 16 players. Multiplayer games include general and team variations of capture the flag, deathmatch, king of the hill, and last man standing, as well as a game called VIP escort, where one player acts as a VIP who must be escorted to a safe zone while the other team tries to kill him. On paper, all this sounds great. There are a nice variety of modes, the interface is simple and easy to use, and in every game different players can play as different class types, such as basic soldiers, close-quarters combatants (who prefer weaponry like shotguns), demolitionists, heavy-weaponry combatants, and snipers. Unfortunately, once you get into the action, it all becomes painfully clear that no amount of game modes can make Task Force 121 enjoyable to play.

The main problems with the multiplayer gameplay have to do with the weapons. There are six guns in the game, including a pistol, a shotgun, and a few different types of machine guns. While each weapon feels initially like it packs a good punch, some of the balancing between weapons feels kind of strange. Shotguns, for instance, are almost always one-hit killers, so long as you're near an enemy. Conversely, some of the larger assault rifles seem like they take way too many hits to actually bring down an opponent. Apart from this, the action just has a tired, bland feel to it. The maps are a big part of this problem, because they don't have much variety to offer. The corridors are often too cramped to be much fun, and even the open spaces seem to lack much in the way of space. Plus, certain soldier classes, like snipers, feel altogether useless in a lot of maps, because there are rarely any good vantage points to properly play them. The multiplayer as a whole feels severely antiquated. The PC version's multiplayer does feel a little quicker, which is a plus, but it still isn't all that great. If you're a forgiving person and don't mind the weird balancing and mediocre maps--and are in desperate need of some run-and-gun action--then Task Force 121 is serviceable. But there are loads of shooters available for the PC that do FPS multiplayer better than this game.

If you're not interested in the online multiplayer, Task Force 121's stock drops even farther, especially when you factor in that the game has absolutely nothing to offer in the way of a single-player experience. Well, OK, it does have a single-player campaign, but it's so unabashedly lame that you won't want to bother with it. Essentially consisting of a scattershot collection of brief missions with seemingly unintentionally hilarious names like "Operation Crazed Liberty" and "Operation Outraged Tension," the mode is just no fun. Basically, all the missions are a bunch of fetch quests where you have to find keys, safe combinations, and other assorted bric-a-brac before getting to the end. That's it. You must get from point A to point B and find a key or something in between.

The action takes place several centuries before the events of the first and second parts of the game. We play what we as Princess Victoria, who will of destiny must assume the decision-making, from which later will depend on the fate of there the universe, as her daughter Julia, who in turn would end the turmoil unleashed by her mother 20 years ago.

During the game, we also have to act as some kind of third character, in order to get a complete picture of the Tribes taking place in the world events. Features:
Hurricane gameplay. The main thing here - to learn how to combine the use of a powerful rocket pack and the possibility of slipping on almost any surface as if you are on some ski slope. The rest will come by itself. It seems as if the developers did their best to make the process of annihilation of opponents turned into a hell of a fascinating and, more importantly, virtually no annoying fun. And they got it (loud and prolonged applause, ladies and gentlemen!).

Steel Storm : Burning Retribution (PC/FullIso/Multi)

Steel Storm Burning Retribution has largely stayed under the radar despite being released across multiple operating systems. The indie shoot’em-up received some attention for its simultaneous release on Windows, Mac, and Linux (from the Linux community, as you probably guessed), and it’s available on Steam, but it seems that most computer gamers have yet to hear about it. Being someone who never quite forgot Raptor: Call of the Shadows and who has always secretly wanted to see it updated, I was more than happy to give this new game a shot.

Steel Storm Burning Retribution, despite its cumbersome name, is actually both a successful game and a great take on the modern shoot’em-up. It’s not a bullet-hell game, but it still manages to be challenging. The mechanics are simple and the weapons are limited to a few pickups (there is not even an RPG-style weapons upgrade system!) but it held my interest throughout most of the the two episodes.

SSBR is pretty basic: you have a top-down view of a plane-type-craft that can fly in any direction (think Asteroids). You fly around, exploring a map and killing anything that shoots at you. There are some some picks-ups (weapon upgrades, auxiliary weapons, and keys to get through gates) but primarily the game is about out-maneuvering the waves of enemies that you encounter. There are two episodes, each of which is made up of a number of missions of varying length and difficulty. The first episode is full-featured but comes off as an introduction while the second gets you into the real battle.

The gameplay is basic–go up/down/left/right and then click the mouse to kill everything in your path. Your road is not a direct one, rather you’ll need to double back to open gates, find data keys, and pick up health/upgrades that you left behind. From the starting point to the end you’ll need to kill hordes of enemy ships, turrets, and tanks. The enemies only come in a few different forms, but they are surprisingly clever for a shoot’em-up. They attack well in groups, use cover, and use basic but effective tactics. They also have a (somewhat cheap) habit of materializing out of nowhere, directly behind you, which helps them out.

When you die you start back at the origin point for that stage, but progress if only lost if you run out of lives. After dying you usually can be back to where you were in a minute or two, you’ll just be missing your upgraded weapons.

The shoot’em-up genre doesn’t get the attention that it used to, but that doesn’t mean that there aren’t titles being released. Or that when games are released, that they aren’t any good. Steel Storm has its problems–it gets repetitive, stages don’t vary much from one to the next, and the rewards are limited to just an increase in your score–but it still manages to be a lot of fun. This is a well designed indie game and a game that I’m quite glad I stumbled upon. In future versions I’d like more weapons and maybe some sort of store where it’s possible to buy upgrades, but as it is the game has a sort of purity to it that I do appreciate.

SpellForce lets you start out by creating a character who acts as a powerful military unit in the game. You can choose to be a male or female character that specializes in various types of melee combat, ranged combat with bows, or one of a few different schools of magic. As you complete your adventures and defeat enemies, your character may attain new levels of expertise in these fields, in addition to acquiring new weapons, armor, and magic spells. The game's character advancement is paced well enough to let you create either a focused specialist character or a well-rounded generalist character. And like with any good role-playing game, you may find yourself fighting just one more battle to accomplish just one more goal. You may be trying to gain a level and some new abilities; you may be trying to save up enough coin to purchase a new spell or item from a merchant in a town area; you may be trying to explore the wilderness for hidden treasure chests full of loot; or you may be trying to finish up one of many side quests you'll receive in each level.

The real-time strategy portion of SpellForce is just as intriguing as its role-playing elements, even if it doesn't work quite as well. However, while most real-time strategy games require you to research upgrades by spending some resources--and then sitting and waiting--SpellForce's technology upgrades appear as rune items that your character can add to his or her inventory. Once these upgrades are equipped, your character will always have these new buildings and troops available for construction. It then becomes a matter of simply gathering enough resources and subsequently ordering your workers to erect the proper buildings.

SpellForce features six different playable races that you'll eventually be able to recruit in the single-player game (and these races are also available in multiplayer play), which ultimately lets you mix and match your troops so that you can create interesting battalions of healers, wizards, archers, and melee units with different abilities. Multiplayer lets you choose from one of 10 prebuilt characters with various high-level specializations. You then recruit multidimensional armies for competitive play in one of 12 maps. Multiplayer offers only head-to-head and team-based competition; there are no other game modes. Also, your characters do not remain persistent from game session to game session, like in the Warlords Battlecry series, though they don't need to be leveled up de novo in each game either, like in Warcraft III.
